Professional
oral hygiene.

Professional cleaning works where a brush does not enter: between one tooth and the next, under the gum margin, around an implant or an orthodontic bracket. The work is done with air, water and a very fine powder.

Cleaning where the toothbrush cannot reach.

What it is

Biofilm is plaque, once it gets organized.

Regular removal prevents tartar and inflammation.

Biofilm is a layer of bacteria that sticks to the tooth and structures itself. Left alone it hardens into tartar and inflames the gum. Removing it properly, at intervals decided on your case, is the simplest and most useful part of all dentistry.

The five surfaces

A molar is cleaned surface by surface.

The hidden surfaces are the most delicate.

The surfaces of a molar have different names because they behave differently: access, shape and the way they hold biofilm all change.

  1. Occlusal

    The chewing surface

It is the one you see when you open your mouth. It has deep grooves, and a brush reaches it without trouble.

  2. Buccal

    The face towards the cheek

The easiest to reach and the most checked in the mirror. The delicate spot here is the gum margin, not the middle of the tooth.

  3. Lingual

    The face towards the tongue

You brush it without seeing it, so it collects tartar before the others do. On lower molars that is almost always the case.

  4. Mesial

    The side towards the midline

It rests against the tooth next to it. A brush does not get in: floss, interdental brushes and professional cleaning do.

  5. Distal

    The side towards the back

The same problem as the mesial side, with less room for your hands. It is the face people neglect most.

How often to repeat the cleaning is not the same for everyone: it is decided at the visit, by looking at how the gums are doing.

The session

How the session works.

Air, water and a very fine powder.

Air, water and a very fine powder

Biofilm comes off through controlled abrasion instead of scraping. It is the way of working that weighs least on enamel and gum.

On implants and braces too

Those are the hardest surfaces to keep clean and the most delicate to treat. Professional cleaning is meant for them as well.

If it hurts, we stop

Discomfort is not part of the treatment. If you feel pain during the session you say so, and we stop.

Frequent questions

The most frequent questions.

For anything else, the front desk is available.

Does it hurt?

Working with air and powder exists precisely to weigh less than manoeuvres that scrape. If you feel discomfort during the session you say so, and we stop.

How often should it be done?

There is no interval that fits everyone. It is decided at the visit, by looking at how the gums are doing and how your teeth pick up deposits.

Do I need it even if I have never had a cavity?

Cleaning is not only about cavities. It is about the gum, which gets inflamed by biofilm even when the teeth are healthy.

My teeth are sensitive. Can I still have it done?

Say so before we start. Sensitivity changes the way we work and the order the surfaces are covered in, and it is the most useful thing you can tell us.

Can I have it done with an implant or braces?

Yes, and that is where it matters most: around an implant and under an orthodontic bracket biofilm builds up faster than elsewhere.

I came to this clinic for a dental problem I had been carrying around for a long time, and the experience was really positive. Dr. Marotta was very precise and, above all, gentle, which for me was fundamental since I have always been a bit afraid. The practice is modern and clean, and the whole staff puts you at ease right away.
