Orthodontics for
alignment and function.

Aligned teeth improve hygiene and chewing.

Orthodontics moves teeth into the position where the two arches close better. Aligned teeth are easier to clean and distribute the chewing load correctly.

Arch

What it is

Moving a tooth means remodelling the bone around it.

The path is measured in months.

A tooth moves because a light, constant force makes the bone around it remodel. It is not a push, it is a direction held for a long time. That is why an orthodontic path is measured in months and not in appointments.

The assessment

The preliminary assessment.

Bite, gums and imaging before treatment.

The position of a tooth is assessed within the arch and against the opposite arch, not on its own. That is why the assessment always precedes treatment.

  1. Bite

    How the two arches close

The problem is nearly always the relationship between the arches, not the tooth you notice in the mirror. We start from how you close.

  2. Gums

    The state of the gums

Nothing gets moved on inflamed gums: the inflammation is treated first, then the movement is planned.

  3. Imaging

    What is under the crown

Roots and bone are assessed before starting, in three dimensions where needed.

The advantages

The advantages of treatment.

Easier hygiene and a well-distributed load.

It cleans better

Aligned teeth leave fewer places a brush cannot enter. That is the advantage still there when the smile is no longer news.

The load spreads out

When the arches close well, chewing does not always unload onto the same teeth.

Maintenance is part of the path

Biofilm builds up faster under an orthodontic bracket. Professional hygiene during the path is not an extra.

Frequent questions

The most frequent questions.

The rest is answered at the assessment visit.

Is it only for teenagers?

No. Bone remodels in adults too, which is why an orthodontic path stays possible at many ages. What changes with age is explained at the visit.

How long does it take?

It depends on how much and how the teeth have to move. The estimate is made after looking, not before.

Does it hurt?

The forces used are light by definition. In the days after an adjustment you feel pressure, and we tell you beforehand.

Can I have professional cleaning during the path?

It is worth it, and it is the part people tend to postpone. Around brackets biofilm builds up faster than elsewhere.
